The Rails That Built the Maroon Spirit

Long before it became a bustling hub of research and academic excellence, College Station, Texas, owed its very name to the intersection of higher education and the railroad. In 1876, the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas opened its doors as an isolated outpost in the Brazos Valley. Because the campus was situated directly along the tracks of the Houston and Texas Central Railway, the local train stop quickly became known simply as “College Station”.

The railroad served as the vital lifeline for generations of Aggies traveling to campus, bringing with them letters, packages, and news from home. Linking this rich locomotive history with the global community of Postcrossing beautifully honors the timeless tradition of connecting people across vast distances.
